& Figures on Fibromyalgia
- Fibromyalgia affects as many as 6 million people in the U.S.
- Fibromyalgia occurs mainly in women of childbearing age, and strikes
women seven times more often than men, according to a 1998 National
Institutes of Health report.
- Among the entire population, it's estimated that as many as 3-6% of
the general population, including children, meet the criteria for diagnosis
of fibromyalgia, making fibromyalgia over twice as common as rheumatoid
arthritis.
- Fibromyalgia symptoms usually arise between the ages of 20-55 years,
but other age groups are affected.
- One study found that among healthy schoolchildren, as many as 6% met
fibromyalgia criteria.
- Some studies show that there are remissions in as many as 24 percent
of patients, and symptom improvement in almost half of all patients
- About 90% of all people with fibromyalgia are women, 10% men.
