What is Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia (pronounced fy-bro-my-al-ja) is a common and perplexing chronic condition characterized by widespread and often severe musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, and multiple tender points.    Fibromyalgia is also sometimes referred to as fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS), fibrositis, fibromyositis, and myofibrositis.

Fibromyalgia has only recently been recognized as an actual condition, when formalized criteria for diagnosis were established in 1990.   Fibromyalgia has not been identified as an autoimmune disorder itself. However, it often accompanies other endocrine and rheumatic autoimmune disorders, and the American Autoimmune Related Diseases Association has designated it as autoimmune.

Fibromyalgia can be quite difficult to diagnose, because its shares symptoms with many other disorders.

A complete description of Fibromyalgia is featured in the book Living Well With Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia.
